McHugh spot on for Hearts

Buncrana Hearts Reserves 1 Quigley’s Point Swifts 0 Buncrana Hearts’ second string bagged their first points of their Premier Division campaign with a narrow victory over the weary wanderers QPS at a blustery Castle Park on Sunday afternoon. An early penalty from Stephen McHugh proved the difference between the sides as Hearts inflicted a third consecutive defeat on the Foyleside men who have yet to get a point on the board after three games and now sit joint bottom of the table with Illies Celtic. The only goal of the game came in the 2nd minute when Stephen McHugh was upended in the penalty are by Swift’s Kevin Wallace. McHugh dusted himself down to convert the resultant spot kick past David McGeady in the QPS goal. McHugh almost doubled the home side’s advantage minutes later when the ball broke for him inside the box and he made a sharp turn and shot which McGeady did well to save. The Point settled and went in search of an equaliser. Anthony McColgan headed wide before the same player had a shot brilliantly tipped over by the alert Tony O’Loughlin in the home goal. On 42 minutes QPS stroker Michael Wilson fired twenty five yards free just wide. QPS continued to push forward in the second half but they couldn’t find a way past the in form O’Loughlin. On the restart Michael McColgan saw his well struck effort tipped over by O’Loughlin. With the Point exerting a lot of pressure they should have leveled on 66 minutes when Anto McColgan raced clear rounded O’Loughlin but his subsequent shot hit the side netting. Minutes later McColgan’s corner was headed just wide by QPS player manager Terry McColgan. Buncrana replied on 79 minutes when Alan Fletcher fed James O’Donnell on the left who beat a defender and fired across goal and wide. Hearts’ goal was leading a charmed life as another free from The Point’s Wilson rebounded off the post. Buncrana broke in the final minute through substitute Dale Kerr but his effort well saved by McGeady as Hearts ran out winners.
