Buncrana mourns passing of Kevin Downey

It was with deep sadness the local community learned of the death, at the age of 28, of Kevin Downey of Gransha, Buncrana. Kevin, eldest son of Sadie and Kevin Downey, was very well known throughout the locality and through his association with Supervalu on Cockhill Road. where he worked for the past ten years. Management and staff from the store, which closed for a period as a mark of respected on Friday last, formed a guard of honour outside the shop as the funeral procession made its way from his home to St. Mary’s Church, Cockhill, for Requiem Mass. Kevin was a much loved and popular young man as was evident by the large number of people who attended his wake and funeral. Kevin was diagnosed with cancer almost three years ago. Although faced with a very difficult situation he accepted it as part of life and got on with living each and every day to the full. During this time he fulfilled many personal ambitions. As was his wish he continued working with his colleagues in Supervalu up to last month. Kevin was great company and had a great sense of fun. He was a friend to many and had many friends, young and old. He never complained of his illness and appreciated each day as it came. Those who knew Kevin will carry fond memories of times spent with him. Last Friday we said farewell to a kind generous big man who unaware, touched, in the best of ways, the lives of many people. Although we are sad at his passing we are thankful for his life and richer for having known Kevin Downey. Kevin is survived by his parents, Sadie and Kevin, brothers Anthony and Aaron and sister Natasha. Following Requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Church, he was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
