Crumbling capital

Councillor fears major Inishowen projects could be in jeopardy by Laura Glenn laura.glenn@inishtimes.com A number of proposed capital projects in Inishowen could be under threat due to the downturn in the construction industry and the peninsula’s gloomy economic forecast.Sinn Féin Councillor Pádraig MacLochlainn told Inish Times Donegal County Council was facing a “huge shortfall” in development charges which were critical in funding projects such as the Malin, Buncrana and Moville Sewerage Schemes. A huge chunk of funding for these projects is derived from development charges applied on the construction of new homes and the setting-up of new businesses.However, as there has been a slow-down in these projects in recent months, funding for major capital projects is now in “huge trouble” and will need to be found elsewhere. Councillor MacLochlainn said he feared the council’s frontline services would also be affected by Government cutbacks.
