Puddle trouble

It may officially be summer but Inishowen has been in the grip of some very unseasonal weather over the past week.Torrential rain, high winds and biting temperatures battered the peninsula and coats and umbrellas quickly replaced shorts and flip-flops.The village of Burnfoot was one of the worst hit on Wednesday last when a 15-minute rain shower resulted in floods and treacherous driving conditions.Witnesses described how sunny skies turned dark “in a matter of minutes” and roads were “turned into rivers.”Drivers travelling from the Tooban area to Bridgend were forced to pull into the side of the road as visibility was reduced and huge puddles of water inches deep gathered at the side of the road.In contrast, while Burnfoot was ankle deep in water, the rest of Inishowen was enjoying bright sunshine and warm temperatures. However, it wasn’t to last and the entire peninsula experienced bad weather over the weekend. In Moville, a yacht was washed up onto the rocks at the Upper Pier in the early hours of Saturday morning. The inclement weather also played havoc on the sporting front with a number of fixtures being cancelled.Unfortunately, the bikinis and sun lotion will stay packed away for a while longer. More rain and miserable weather is forecast for the next ten days.
