War heros commemorated in new book

Inishowen’s Heroes is written by Robert Thompson whose previous works include Bushmill’s Heroes and Kilrea Heroes. The book chronicles the lives of over 200 Inishowen men and women who died in World War One between 1914 and 1918. Mr Thompson’s uncle died in the war and this ignited his interest in the era. He decided to focus on Inishowen when he was contacted by a lady from Malin, asking for information about her uncle who also fought in the war. He was able to help and the woman was so delighted she has let his family stay rent free in Inishowen ever since. The author said: “I wanted to research Inishowen to repay her for her kindness. “I believe a lot of people will have a relative or someone they know included in this book. “It’s amazing the number of fellas from this area who lost their lives.” Friends of the Messines representative PJ Hallinan believes the book is “long overdue”. He said:“It’s an excellent production, very informative and very important in recognising those who gave their lives in World War One. “The spirits of those who died lives on in this book. “These Inishowen people gave their lives to those who believed World War One was for the freedom of small nations.” Inishowen’s Heroes is now available in local bookshops and will be officially launched on Saturday, November 3 at Fort Dunree.
